I wrote this poem to honor my great-grandfather, Sher Singh Basra.

His life sacrifices fuel my inspiration to empower, support and serve the community.

Sher Singh

Mustard fields blooming with yellow flowers in the fertile farmlands

Prayers from the Gurdwara echoing throughout the village

Aromatic scents of thorka, caramelized onions, garlic and ginger, cooking in ghee over the clay-stove

Did you miss those smells, I wonder

Family, laughter, warmth

You left behind this familiarity

You left your son, daughters and wife

You never saw them again

In the early 1920s, my great grandfather, Sher Singh, embarked on an arduous journey from Punjab to America

Punjab to Panama, on foot to Mexico and smuggling your way into California

Where did you stop along the way?

What consumed your thoughts?

Did you shave your beard and turban to look American? To fit in?

To avoid being called “Raghead?”

Anti-Asian racial tensions were high in those times

In California, you found the fields, like the Punjab fields

Fertile farmlands just like home

You worked in the fields and sent every penny you could back home to Punjab,

back to your family

How lonely you must have felt

How you must have missed your wife, your son, your daughters

Your selfless actions raised generations

Baba-ji, your son, invested the money into community and allowed so many to benefit from your efforts

Dad, your grandson, came to America to follow in your steps

I, your great-granddaughter, use this privilege to serve

Acta Non Verba - Deeds, Not Words

We are planting seeds to flourish the future of our youth

The next generation of advocates and activists, who will lead change

Acta Non Verba, engaging youth in agriculture, connecting them back to the farmland

Just like the ancestors before us
